Samsung Heavy Industries Teams with U.S. S&L to Develop FSMR... Securing Future Leadership

Samsung Heavy Industries has joined hands with Sargent & Lundy, a master of American nuclear power plant design with over 130 years of history, to commence development of a Floating Sea-based Modular Reactor (FSMR) platform equipped with Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), taking an innovative step to reshape the future global energy market landscape.

Samsung Heavy Industries signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for mutual priority cooperation with Sargent & Lundy (S&L) to develop a "Floating Sea-based Nuclear Power Generation Platform (FSMR)" in Washington D.C. on the 21st local time. Kim Kyung-hee, Executive Vice President and Head of Future Business Division at Samsung Heavy Industries, and Siven Sulka, Chief Nuclear Officer at S&L, attended the ceremony and emphasized the importance of cooperation.

The FSMR is a floating sea-based power generation platform equipped with Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) and is evaluated as an innovative energy solution capable of providing stable power to island regions and military bases with insufficient power grids. It offers advantages in flexibility and ease of deployment compared to existing land-based reactors.

S&L, the partner in this cooperation, was established in 1891 and boasts a history of over 130 years as a leading American nuclear power plant design and engineering company. S&L has led the design and engineering of global nuclear power projects for over 70 years and has earned recognition for its outstanding technological capabilities, having been selected as a leading company in the nuclear plant field in ENR's "2026 Top Design Sourcebook."

The two companies plan to develop a "FSMR Standard Platform" not limited to specific reactor types to ensure versatility and enable the installation of various reactors. This targets the global market including the United States and represents a strategy to set new standards in the offshore nuclear power market.

Kim Kyung-hee, Executive Vice President of Samsung Heavy Industries' Future Business Division, expressed his ambition regarding this MOU, stating "We will lead the global offshore nuclear power market." Siven Sulka, Chief Nuclear Officer at S&L, also expressed great expectations, saying "This cooperation will be an important milestone for America's future clean energy."

The FSMR development cooperation between Samsung Heavy Industries and S&L is expected to serve as an important turning point in elevating offshore nuclear power technology, which currently remains at the conceptual design stage, to the actual commercial deployment phase. It is anticipated that this will provide sustainable energy solutions to power-deficient regions around the world while solidifying Samsung Heavy Industries' leading position in the global offshore nuclear power market.
