Samsung Heavy Industries has joined hands with Sargent & Lundy, a master of American nuclear power plant design with over 130 years of history, to commence development of a Floating Sea-based Modular Reactor (FSMR) platform equipped with Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), taking an innovative step to reshape the future global energy market landscape.
Samsung Heavy Industries signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for mutual priority cooperation with Sargent & Lundy (S&L) to develop a "Floating Sea-based Nuclear Power Generation Platform (FSMR)" in Washington D.C. on the 21st local time. Kim Kyung-hee, Executive Vice President and Head of Future Business Division at Samsung Heavy Industries, and Siven Sulka, Chief Nuclear Officer at S&L, attended the ceremony and emphasized the importance of cooperation.
The FSMR is a floating sea-based power generation platform equipped with Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) and is evaluated as an innovative energy solution capable of providing stable power to island regions and military bases with insufficient power grids. It offers advantages in flexibility and ease of deployment compared to existing land-based reactors.
S&L, the partner in this cooperation, was established in 1891 and boasts a history of over 130 years as a leading American nuclear power plant design and engineering company. S&L has led the design and engineering of global nuclear power projects for over 70 years and has earned recognition for its outstanding technological capabilities, having been selected as a leading company in the nuclear plant field in ENR's "2026 Top Design Sourcebook."
