SK Hynix's stock price fell sharply during trading on the 28th and is currently trading at 1,616,000 won. This represents a decline of 200,000 won (-11.01%) compared to the previous trading day, which is interpreted as the result of massive profit-taking sales coinciding with the announcement of large-scale new facility investments. Major semiconductor index adjustment movements are also adding pressure to investor sentiment.
SK Hynix (000660) stock plunged over 11% during intraday trading on the 28th in the KOSPI market, raising investor concerns. Currently trading at 1,616,000 won, it has declined 200,000 won (-11.01%) compared to the previous trading day. This sharp decline is analyzed as a result of the recently announced large-scale new facility investment plan combined with the desire to realize short-term gains following the ongoing stock price increases.
It is widely understood that among the announcements made over the past seven days, the "new facility investment" announcement had the greatest impact on today's stock price decline. SK Hynix stated it would undertake large-scale investments to secure future growth drivers; however, the market appears to be interpreting this as a short-term capital expenditure burden and potential supply glut concerns. In particular, despite sustained expectations for memory semiconductor industry improvements centered on high-bandwidth memory (HBM), the announcement of large-scale investments has raised questions about the need to reassess the sustainability of related industry conditions. Some observers are offering cautious forecasts that excessive investment scale could negatively impact future profit margins.
The "changes in product and service transactions with related company shareholders" announcement made repeatedly in recent times appears to be an internal transaction adjustment and efficiency optimization effort within the company, but is evaluated as not having content substantial enough to directly impact the stock price. Additionally, the fact that the stock price decline could not be prevented despite a "clarification on rumors or reports" announcement suggests that specific rumors or reports circulating in the market had a significant impact on investor sentiment, or that the clarification content did not completely alleviate market concerns.
From a supply and demand perspective, selling pressure from institutional and foreign investors is concentrated and driving the stock price decline. As programmed selling volumes pour in during intraday trading, it is insufficient for retail investors' low-price buying to defend against this. As a frontrunner in the HBM market, SK Hynix has been spotlighted as a key beneficiary of the artificial intelligence (AI) semiconductor era, sustaining a sharp upward trend. However, these high expectations have simultaneously acted as a high valuation burden and provided an opportunity for short-term adjustments, according to analysis.
A semiconductor industry official explained, "As SK Hynix has shown a sharp upward trend riding on the AI semiconductor boom, it is true that the market has been cautious about short-term overheating. Large-scale CapEx (capital expenditure) investments are positive in the long term, but in the short term they raise concerns about deteriorating profitability and become a factor inducing profit-taking sales." Additionally, the recent adjustment trend shown by the U.S. Philadelphia Semiconductor Index is identified as one of the factors dampening investor sentiment across domestic semiconductor stocks in general.
Going forward, SK Hynix's stock price is expected to hinge on securing support levels to recover from today's decline. In the short term, whether support holds in the early 1.6 million won range is important, and additional declines cannot rule out the possibility of falling into the 1.5 million won range. However, considering that the long-term growth potential of the memory semiconductor industry and SK Hynix's HBM technology leadership remain valid, there is also a view that the current adjustment may be a process of overheated market sentiment cooling. What is important is that global economic recovery, the actual growth rate of AI semiconductor demand, and the concrete results of large-scale investments will be key variables determining the future direction of the stock price.
