In June 2026, the Korean economy dispelled concerns about economic slowdown and recorded a "triple increase" with surging production, consumption, and investment, firing a clear signal of rebound. In particular, overall industrial production increased at the largest margin in six years, infusing vitality throughout the economy. The National Data Service announced this through its "June Industrial Activity Trends" released today (31st).

The overall industrial production index, which had shown a declining trend in April and May, rose 2.3% compared to the previous month in June, marking the largest increase in six years since June 2020 (2.9%). This production momentum was driven by the manufacturing sector. Manufacturing production increased 6.4%, showing the largest growth in six years. In particular, semiconductor production, which had recorded a significant 10.0% decline in May, surged 4.5% in June, achieving a dramatic reversal. Automobile production increased 15.4%, and machinery and equipment production increased 8.6%, showing clear recovery in major manufacturing sectors.

Consumption and investment indicators also rose in tandem, adding positive momentum to the overall economy. The retail sales index, indicating commodity consumption, increased 2.7%. In particular, sales of durable goods such as automobiles and communication devices and computers surged 12.6%, strongly suggesting recovery in consumer sentiment. Facility investment increased 5.8%, and construction completed work (at constant prices) increased 4.1%, with vitality detected in the investment sector as well.

Major indicators reflecting current and future economic conditions also confirmed an improving trend. The coincident composite index cyclical variation, representing the current economic situation, rose 0.5 percentage points compared to the previous month. The leading composite index cyclical variation, which forecasts the future economic phase, also increased 0.9 percentage points, raising expectations for future economic prospects.

The "triple increase" in production, consumption, and investment in June, recorded three months after March, sent a clear recovery signal to the Korean economy. Through its analysis of the June industrial activity trends, the National Data Service diagnosed that the Korean economy has finished catching its breath in April and May and has begun to ride a strong recovery trend. As the revival of core driving industries such as semiconductors meshes with domestic demand activation, expectations are growing that the upward trend of leading indicators will solidify these positive currents.
