Alphabet's dual earnings report on "expanded AI investment" and "concerns over excessive spending" has emerged as a key variable in the domestic stock market. Despite sales exceeding market expectations, the stock price plummeted due to investment burden concerns, signaling volatile trading in the KOSPI.
Alphabet's second quarter earnings announced the previous day (22nd) showed revenue of $119.8 billion, a 24% surge year-over-year, exceeding market forecasts. Notably, the cloud division recorded $24.8 billion in revenue with explosive growth of 82%. This demonstrates Alphabet's strong technological leadership amid the competition to expand artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure investment.
However, every light casts a shadow. Alphabet announced that its free cash flow (FCF) turned negative at $5.86 billion due to AI investment burden. The company also significantly raised its capital expenditure guidance for 2026 to $195-205 billion. Consequently, Alphabet's stock price fell over 3% in after-hours trading, reflecting investor concerns.
The domestic KOSPI closed at 6,797.70, up 0.74%, despite the "strong opening, weak close" trend on the 22nd. The index briefly touched 7,000 points during the session, raising expectations for gains, while foreign investors led the market with net purchases on a trillion-won scale of 2.6299 trillion won.

The domestic stock market on this day showed a mixture of various factors beyond the Alphabet shock. While the three major indices in the U.S. stock market showed weakness, the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index rose 0.44%, maintaining expectations for the semiconductor sector. This could have a positive impact on major domestic semiconductor companies such as SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics. In fact, the MSCI Korea ETF rose over 1% in after-hours trading, and the KOSPI 200 night futures showed a 1.70% gain.
However, surging oil prices due to escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East acted as another burden on the market. September West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil futures rose 2.95% to $86.83 per barrel, while Brent crude climbed to $94.07.
Seo Sang-young, executive director at Mirae Asset Securities, diagnosed Alphabet's earnings report as "bringing uncertainty as AI investment burden has come to the forefront." Han Ji-young, a researcher at Kiwoom Securities, stated that "volatility is expected to continue for some time," while also noting that "there is a possibility that the market is currently entering the lower range."
In conclusion, attention is being paid to whether Alphabet-led AI investment competition will serve as a future growth driver for tech stocks or whether excessive spending burden will hamper the overall market. As expert opinions suggest the possibility of bottom formation in the KOSPI from a long-term perspective despite short-term volatility, a cautious approach is warranted at this time.
