The problem originated from Canadian wildfires. As wildfire smoke moved southward, air quality in the New York area deteriorated sharply. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) air quality information website 'AirNow,' the Air Quality Index (AQI) in the East Rutherford area reached 101 on the 15th, a level hazardous to sensitive groups, and then surged to 157 on the 16th, a level harmful to health. That afternoon, Manhattan's sky in New York turned a dark gray, and as New York City recommended refraining from outdoor activities, concerns about rescheduling the final match even arose among football fans worldwide.
However, the situation reversed starting in the afternoon of the 17th. The AQI dropped below 100, improving to a 'moderate' level. The EPA predicted that even with some deterioration on the 18th, conditions would return to moderate levels by the 19th, the day of the final.
The World Cup organizers quickly issued a statement.
